Ahhh, the honeymoon — a chance to sit back, relax by the pool with your favourite person, and soak up the bliss of newly married life together. For many newlyweds, planning the perfect honeymoon can just be as important as the big day itself. With something special to celebrate, what better way to do so than with an all-out holiday of a lifetime?
While some couples know exactly where their dream destination lies early on, others may be open to new ideas. We've compiled a list of the ten best destinations for a honeymoon or mini-moon in this Trtl guide. We've also weighed in with Lori Delaney, Marketing Manager at Trtl, to help you find the best destination for your special trip.
What is a honeymoon?
The term 'honeymoon' was first coined in the medieval period and referred to the tradition of drinking mead for a month following a wedding. While the word's meaning has changed slightly over time, celebrating marriage is still very much at the centre.
Today, a honeymoon is a trip taken by a newlywed couple shortly after their wedding to spend quality time together and celebrate the start of their next life chapter. This holiday can be anything from coastal relaxation to hiking through the Himalayas — the key point is that you do it together with your spouse. Typically, a honeymoon lasts one to two weeks if you're heading overseas, which is why many couples opt to start planning and budgeting for their honeymoon as soon as they’re engaged!
What is a mini-moon?
You may have stumbled across the term 'mini-moon', but what exactly is it?
Like a regular honeymoon, a mini-moon is a special getaway for a newly married couple to enjoy alone time together, but what makes it different is the length of time. A mini-moon usually lasts around five days at most, with many opting for an even shorter break. These trips often take the form of a staycation, or (for those living in the UK), a quick holiday in Europe that doesn’t take too much travelling time.
There are a range of benefits to opting for a mini-moon, with the main reason being a lower budget for the trip. Mini-moons are especially popular with couples who work busy jobs and may not be able to take enough time off for a standard honeymoon, but they still provide plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind with your spouse.

How to save money while on a honeymoon
Honeymoons are notorious for being among the most expensive holidays some people will ever go on. To celebrate, many couples prefer to book a luxury resort that offers them enough seclusion to thoroughly enjoy some alone time, but these costs can quickly add up.
To help you create your dream honeymoon on any budget, we've caught up with Lori Delaney, Marketing Manager here at Trtl, who shares some tips for saving money on your trip.
1. Fly during off-peak days or times
One of the most effective ways to save money on your honeymoon is to be strategic with your flight timings and choose less popular times to travel. "Flying during off-peak days or times can really help you stretch your budget further," Lori advises. Travellers who opt for these off-peak flights can expect to save an average of 23% — so it's definitely worth thinking about!
Airlines often charge higher fares on weekends and around public holidays when demand is high for quick getaways. You can often find significantly cheaper fares by opting to fly mid-week on days like Tuesday or Wednesday. Additionally, early-morning or late-night flights — usually dubbed 'red-eye' flights — tend to be cheaper as they’re less convenient for most travellers.
"The small sacrifice of flying at odd hours can result in some substantial savings on your travel costs, allowing you to allocate more of your budget to other parts of your honeymoon — like a special dinner or an extra excursion," Lori adds.
Another way to save money on your flights is to limit the amount of luggage you bring with you. Travelling with just hand luggage may seem daunting—particularly if you're planning to enjoy multiple different activities during your holiday—but our Trtl Packing Pods make flying light a breeze. Simply fill them up with all of your essentials and pop them in your carry-on for a hassle-free travel experience that saves you the hefty cargo luggage fees.
2. Choose your accommodation wisely
Accommodation is one of the largest expenses on any honeymoon, and you can usually expect to spend well into the hundreds — if not thousands — for the room of your dreams. Thankfully, there are clever ways to save money without sacrificing your comfort. One way to keep your accommodation costs low is to think beyond the typical five-star hotel that we tend to associate with honeymoons.
"You don't always have to book the most expensive resort to enjoy a luxurious stay. Consider boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts, AirBnBs, or even holiday rentals, which can offer a more personalised experience at a lower cost," Lori says.
Looking for accommodation that offers added value — like free breakfast and complimentary airport transfers — or opting for honeymoon packages that include extras like spa treatments or romantic dinners can help you maximise your budget and save money on other areas.
The location is also something to consider if you're trying to cut costs on your accommodation. "Sometimes, staying just a little outside the main tourist areas can also save you money while giving you a more authentic experience of the destination. It's all about finding the right balance between comfort, location, and cost," Lori explains.
3. Research local deals for your destination
Doing some homework before your trip can help you save on your activities and dining. "Every destination will have local deals that can help you get more out of your budget," Lori points out. "Checking out local tourism websites for your chosen destination, alongside discount voucher sites, can be a great way to find better prices for activities, attractions, and even cuisine."
"You'd be surprised at how many deals are out there if you take the time to look," she adds. Some attractions may offer discounts for booking in advance, while many restaurants provide special deals during off-peak hours. "It's also worth heading to local visitor centres when you arrive, as they’ll have information on current promotions or discount booklets that aren't always available online," she suggests.
By tapping into these resources, you can enjoy the best of your destination without breaking the bank. Plus, your research may point you toward some fantastic local businesses that will make your honeymoon experience all the more enjoyable.
4. Book each part of your honeymoon separately
While it may seem easier to book your entire honeymoon as a package, you could actually save yourself some money by booking your flights, accommodation, and activities separately.
"When you book everything separately, you have more control over your budget," says Lori. "Booking separately allows you to shop around for the best deals on each aspect of your honeymoon and create your own 'package' that's specifically catered to the types of activities you and your partner want to do."
She adds, "Sometimes, package deals include things you don't really need or want, and you end up paying more than you would if you'd just purchased everything separately,"
Booking individual parts of your honeymoon allows you to mix and match different options to work around your budget without falling short of your expectations. For example, you might choose to stay in a budget-friendly hotel for the first few nights and splurge on a luxury resort for the final part of your honeymoon. "This way, you can create a customised experience that's perfect for you without overspending," Lori concludes.
5. Tell airlines and hotels that you’re honeymooning
Don't be shy about letting airlines and hotels know that you're on your honeymoon. "You'd be surprised at how often companies go the extra mile for honeymooners," says Lori. While there's no guarantee you'll gain any benefits from letting them know you're travelling for a special occasion, many airlines and hotels are willing to offer upgrades, complimentary services, or little surprises like a bottle of champagne or chocolates in your room when you arrive.
"It never hurts to mention that it's your honeymoon when you're making reservations or checking in," Lori advises. "The worst that can happen is you're given an extra 'congratulations'. On the other hand, some hotels have special honeymoon packages that include romantic extras at no additional cost."
She adds, "Even if it doesn't lead to an upgrade, it can still add a special touch to your trip and make it even more memorable."
